How to fix error B200 on canon Printers

How to fix error B200 on canon Printers
MAJ11/06/17

Error B200 means the printhead voltage or temperature is not normal. The Printhead could be defective.... but first, try these solutions below:


Solution 1:
  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer.
  • Wait 1 hour.
  • Connect the power cable

Solution 2:
  • Check and Clean Head contact pin condition of the carriage unit
  • Check Cable connection especially the carriage FFC

Solution 3:
  • Turn off the power
  • Open the panel
  • Turn on the power
  • Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left.
  • Let it go past half way
  • Before print carriage reaches left hand side shut the cover.
  • Leave the Printer turned on

Solution 4:
  • Unplug the power cable.
  • Open the printer
  • Push the whole print head mechanic to the center
  • While the printer still open, plug the power and turn it ON. 
  • When the printhead still moving and is going to the very LEFT, close the cover. 
  • Wait until its boot up. 

Solution 4a:
  • Take out all of the ink cartridges
  • Lift up the grey bar by where the ink goes
  • Left the print head in the middle of the printer all while the printer was off.

Solution 4b (thank you Jeremy):
  • Clean the plastic head primers/cleaners themselves on the printer (the far right) 

Solution 4c (thank you Rhiann):
  • Turn off the printer
  • Open the cover
  • Turn on the printer
  • Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left and let it go past half way
  • Before print carriage reaches left hand side (but after going halfway across) shut the cover.
  • Leave the Printer turned on.

Solution 4d: (thank you John Wittman)
  • My Canon MX860 locked up with the B200 error when I continued printing without black ink. I removed printhead as described elsewhere and carefully flushed with hot tap water until no further ink waste was present. Reinstalled, but this did not resolve the B200 message and lockout.
  • Removed printhead again and this time removed 2 small screws (with jeweler's scredriver) on printhead to dimantle it. Use care to protect the ribbon cable. Do not try to remove this cable. You will see a complex rubber gasket. Remove this and clean with hot water. Set aside.
  • With screws removed, this will give access for more cleaning of the ink passages. Used hot water, then isopropal alcohol to wash, and finally a small (1/4") soft rubber tube to gently blow out water/alcohol from the printhead body. Be careful to not touch or push on the ink jets (little metal strips - large set for color; second set for black printing). Dried parts and reassembled. Carefully replace the gasket so that it fits over the plastic tips of the several ink ports.
  • Error B200 has disappeared
  • Ran printer maintenance from the PC: head deep cleaning, regular cleaning 3 times and head alignment check. Gradually print quality has been restored as ink has flowed into the printhead cavity and to the ink jets.

I took out all of the ink cartridges, lifted up the grey bar by where the ink goes, left the print head in the middle of the printer all while the printer was off. When I turned it back on, everything is now working.

I had tried turning it off and on multiple times and nothing was working.

Removed power cord for an hour, removed cartridges adn print head. Took some alcohol and cleaned the print head chip and contacts. Put it back together, and Voila. It works again.

This worked for me:
Pulling power for at least 1 minute, during which, all ink cartridges & print head were removed. Cleaned excess ink from bottom of print head. Replaced head & cartridges & plugged printer back in. When it powered up, error code was gone.

Cleaning the head and the conectors worked for my it takes just 2 min. to clean them whit cleaning solution and putting them back.

I can't get to the ink cartridges when the power is off, and when I turn it on, the error code prevents me from doing anything. Lifting the scanner bed usually will bring the cartridges to the middle, but now it's just not doing anything. I'd rather try to clean the contacts, but how do I get to them?

I had the same issue with the cartridges not moving to the middle, so I turned the printer off and opened the scanner bed and then turned the printer on and the cartridges went to the middle like they were supposed to. Hope this helps.

Had the same error message. After reading this, I turned off the printer, opened the scanner cover and took out the ink cartridges, one at a time, and blotted the excess ink from them. Put them back in, closed the cover, turned it back on and clicked print again. It worked! Thanks!

In trying to resolve the B 200 problem, but I can't get the printhead back to the middle so I can clean it and the contacts. I follwed the suggestions just above with no success. Could someone PLEASE get us past this new obstacle and enable us to access the printhead. Thanks.

My printhead also didn't move to the middle, so while it was unplugged, I opened the scanner and physically moved it to the middle. I was scared at first that I would break it, but it moved smoothly and stayed there until I pushed it back. Now to get everything else to work...

This process worked to solve the B200 message and lockout, and restored printing. Please comment if this succeeds for you (or not).

My Canon MX860 locked up with the B200 error when I continued printing without black ink. Expected that I burned out the print head based on web research. Removed printhead as described elsewhere and carefully flushed with hot tap water until no further ink waste was present. Reinstalled, but this did not resolve the B200 message and lockout.

As now I'm flushing the print heads with warm water
One color(cyan)it is harder to clean the printer was telling me that the Cyan color tank was getting low but never told me to change the cartridge
Maybe THIS IS the problem (dry ink ?)

Oh, yes I'll be changing the Cyan cartridge
Twenty minutes later I will put everything and we will see...

Opened cover and let print cartridges come to middle of bed. Pulled power cord. Removed all print cartridges. Removed the cartridge "cradle". Cleaned the contacts with a dry tissue (no water, spit or other). Wiped up the bottom of the cradle of all excess ink. Reinstalled cradle. Reinstalled cartridges. Powered on.......works! Took about 2 minutes in total.

This worked for my mg6130.

Just click the start button, as soon as the printer starts press and hold the start button until it starts (the screem will appear). Release the button the printer will turn off. Turn it on again and use as usual.....

Be VERY careful when trying to remove the screws on the printer head as one small slip and you can easily ruin the ribbon (as I did grrr)...

I tried all of these steps and still get the error code. I do have a blinking light for copy that I cannot get rid of. If I turn it on with it open to the print cartridges It does go thru the movement and priming of the ink but the minute I close it it goes to copy on the board and then back to the b200 message...I think it is a logic board?
Where to price them?...next step.....

1.) Download and install "Canon My Printer" then open it and click on troubleshooting till you are called to print a test page. Click yes. Then the error will appear (b200).

2.) Do it like you always do when you want to reach to your ink cartridges then click at print at the dialog above. It will print and that helped me to solve this error.

Sorry for my english. ^^
the error b200 is the printer ink head contact... take it out, unscrew the 2 screw, clean the top and bottom and screw back, get a little piece of very fine sand paper and sand a little the front contact that look like a keyboard and gently do the same on the other side in the printer works for every printer .... you welcome

I have two of these--one of them started the 200 error--I took the print head out of the working one--it didn't work--so don't waste your money or you time trying to fix it--I think the reason others people had luck with getting it to work again--was just that, luck. If it starts this 200 error thing--the printer is dead...stop wasting your time--give up and buy anything else but a canon printer--slow and they break!

Ink cartridges initially seemed "parked" and I was unable to manually move them to the middle with either power on or off, until I applied some gentle force/wiggle.

John Wittman left some good advice, which I followed (except the only gasket I noted was under the section being held down by the two screws). I thoroughly cleaned the printhead & there is no sign of any jet burn when viewed with magnifier, all looks like new.

After reassembly, unfortunately (as I have bulk ink) I'm still getting the B200 error.

I note that I am able to turn the printer on with the body open, and can see the ink cartridges do not move at all.

I lifted up the ink cartridge locking bar a few times, removed & re-installed the printhead in case it was poor contact connections. I note the ribbon cables will move a teeny bit when gently tested by hand, but seem secure.

As per Coco's advice I won't be risking $ ordering a new printhead, and consider this printer "bricked".

Off to get a mono Brother Laser for daily work output & will have another crack at the recalcitrant Canon MX850 later before it takes the high dive into the bin.

Didn't work for my Pixma 560. Going to trash it as I am sure it will cost more to send it to a service center than buying a new one. I am getting sick and tired of all the throw away gadgets that just break after a couple years use. Any recommendations on a replacement WiFi printer?

I have removed all the ink cartiges, cleaned the head, swithched the power off for 15 minutes and then reconnected and still the error persists and the printer is not working. Is there any way the error B200 BE FIXED.

This procedure has worked for me three times:

1) Unplug printer
2) Remove all cartridges from the print head. Discard any that are empty, nearly empty, or gummed up.
3) Remove the print head- by lifting the gray plastic lever that locks it down, then gently pulling the print head out.
4) Inside the print head, thoroughly clean the areas around the sliver metallic "buttons", using q-tips, and a solution of warm water mixed with a few drops of alcohol.
5) Set print head on a thick layer of paper towels, for 10-15 minutes. This lets the watery ink solution bleed out through the area of gold contact lines on the bottom.
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5, using fresh q-tips, until no more ink bleeds out out onto the paper towels.
7) Let the print head dry out THOROUGHLY.
8) Reinstall ink cartridges.
9 Don't re-use old, nearly empty cartridges, and don't use super-cheap cartridges. The latter seem to have a higher tendency to leak and gum up the print head.
10) Plug in printer.

Thanks for all the advise,thought I was going to buy new printer. I cleaned and dried with warm water only, managed to get inkjets to the middle by turning the power on and opening straight away. No more cheap ink jets for me I'll go for Canon next time.

EXCELLENT. Got dreaded B200 Error. Removed cartridges and head. Cleaned up visible ink on outside with Qtips and Alcohol. Put back head/ink. Unplugged and waited a few minutes. WORKS now!

Only found youtube videos of guys chucking them off their balconies before this and was concerned.

What do you mean "click the start button"? The printer has no start button and you can't click it, you press it.
Can you explain "as soon as the printer starts press and hold the start button until it starts"? What are these 2 starts? What's on the screen at each time?

I did all the above and I got rid of the b200 error. But when I ran "deep cleaning", my printer suddenly went off by itself and it won't turn on again. Does this mean it's busted and I need to buy a new printer?

I did all of the above steps,and it worked. Three days of trying on and off. I almost gave up.

I washed the print head 3 times. When it did not work the first day, we left it unplugged until the next day. When we tried again the next day, another washing and drying, still it did not work. I even bought new ink cartridges thought it would help. But no, it did not work.

On the third day, I took out the print head again, washed and soaked in warm water with a bit of dishwashing liquid. Soak for an hour with a few swishing, dry it off for a few hours, then put back in again. I had 5 tries of puting on and off and unplugging. I almost gave up. But a few comments said don't give up, keep on trying so I did and voila, it worked.

On the last try, I had the cover open, turned the printer off, then turned it on again like how everyone said it should, and while it was still processing to open, before "cover is open" appears, I closed it down and there it ewas back to normal.

Thank you for all the ideas, all are so helpful.

For those (like me) who were slightly confused by the "start button" directions, here is a clearer translation:

1. Quickly press and release the printer's power button, so the device begins to turn on.
2. Immediately press and *hold* the power button until the printer completely stops making noises - this may take some time.
3. Release the power button. My printer made a lot more noises before eventually powering off.
4. Turn the printer back on.

At this point, my printer was functional again, although it made a *lot* more noise before printing a test page, and then I had to do a "Deep Cleaning" from the driver's "Maintenance" tab before it began printing correctly again.

Thanks *so* *much* to the person who posted the original "start button" directions, cryptic though they were - you fixed my printer for me! :)

I did the cleaning of print head with warm water/cleaning alcohol and dried it. I turned the power on with the cover open. Then I closed the cover before "cover is open" came on the screen. The Error B200 went away for short time until I clicked on cleaning nozzle option. The Error finally disappeared when I skipped the step of clicking on cleaning the nozzle. Instead, I just clicked print. To my surprise, the printing was working again. Afterwards, I was able to click on cleaning nozzle and the printing was back on track.

I did everything you said... and I kept getting B200... tried many various sequences. ... THEN... After the b200 poured up again, I pulled the plug, manually pulled the printhead Mount out, installed the printed and cartridges, and closed the top. THEN, I passed and held the stop button.After that I pressed the power button and waited. Everything worked after that. Thanks.

i had the B200 on my printer and tried all of the tricks posted and none worked!! after about 2 weeks of trying to decide to throw this MX 850 away, I decided to give it one last shot by soaking the print head in rubbing alcohol for about 2 hours and set the print head outside for around 3 hours to dry!! Presto it worked fine and then I turned the printer off! The next day I turned it on and behold the B200 warning is back on!! i repeated all of these tricks again over the last 24 hours and nothing works!! I have been thinking of a new print head and I worry that it most likely will not work and for around the same price of the print head I could buy a new printer!! I hate taking chances and i cant believe Canon cant build a better product for the money invested!!

This last part of a post someone made was what finally worked after all else failed! Try it!

NONE of these repair methods work for me. None. I'm going to leave the printer unplugged for 24 hours as a last resort. What a huge waste of time and money, going through all these troubleshooting steps and none of them worked.

Whoever posted something to the effect of, "If you get this error, forget it, your printer is now a doorstop; go buy a new one," had the right idea. I believe that is probably the best solution.

You cannot buy an MP560 anymore at list. Canon wants you to buy the MG5420 instead for $99. It is only $85 at Amazon! Canon refuses to match their price.

And the "Canon Loyalty" program is crap. To think that I have spent $5000 on Canon gear over the years, jeez. No loyalty perks for that.

THIS WORKED FOR ME!!
1. Turn OFF Power
2. Open the print head bay (as though you were about to change inks)
3. Turn ON power
4. Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left and let it go past half way

6. Leave the Printer turned on
7. Good to go.

The main menu came up. Then it told me three ink cartridges were empty (true). I pushed the STOP button until the message disappeared. When I tried to copy, the B200 message reappeared.
I redid the procedure, and it would at least let me scan.

Note. Once the printer is turned off, when you turn it back on, you have to go through the entire procedure again or you get the error message.

I don't know what will happen if
I were to replace the empty color ink cartridges, at present I have one printer that will print but not scan and the Pixma which will scan but not print.
When the Pixma wouldn't work, I bought an Epson XP-810 which finally does both (after having major wireless connection problems which were finally solved)

I opened the printer, turned off the printer, took out the cartridges one at a time, then put them back in. kept the printer open, turned it on, then closed the printer, it worked after that.

Tried all the suggested procedures, but none worked. Ordered new printhead, waited 12 days for delivery. Switched printer on to fit new printhead, and decided to try it one more time, it now prints OK !
So now I have a spare printhead in case it goes again.

I took out the print head and the ink cartridges. Ran the print head under warm water until the water ran clear. I let it dry for 24 hours, I just put it all back together and the error is gone and it prints fine. Thanks for all the help.

Just wanted to leave a note for others that may dive into fixing this error.

One solution that is not anywhere - and oddly, not mentioned by Canon support - is to simply clean the plastic head primers/cleaners themselves on the printer (the far right).

I cleaned the head multiple times, tried various things listed here and elsewhere with no success. Then, I noticed that this area was filthy and cleaned with gently with alcohol and soft paper towel. Reset the printer (cover open, power off, power on, close the lid prior to "cover is open" message) and all is well.

Now, who knows - could have been a combo solution. But it's better to try than pay Canon more money for a new head or a printer.
I tried a lot of time on my printer CX897 and no luck. But not sure why I unplugged ed USB cable (not sure it has any relationship) and the printer started and the print head went to the middle. Now I can clean the print head and it seems saved my life!

This worked for me.

I took out the head and put screws away. There are little holes beneath that the ink goes to the printing area. I blow there with my mouth and all ink came out.
Then i open tha printer and did a full clean.

I had three Canon heads that would not behave, so I tried the "disassemble & clean" routine. Couldn't get the stuck ink out (two had been sitting clogged for a couple years). One problem was that the PIGMENT black needs a different solvent than the DYE inks.
THE PIGMENT BLACK AND THE CYAN WERE THE PROBLEM ON ALL OF THEM! But they wouldn't clean.
I finally found "da bomb"!

I've tried every bloody solvent known, Acetone, Toluene Nasty Stuff!), 3 different alcohols, Mineral Spirits, Lacquer Thinner, MEK (REALLY NASTY STUFF! LOL), WD40, Lindseed Oil, Olive Oil (!), Windex, Prestone (in the US it's THE radiator fluid for cars, has propylene glycol), a combination of the last two with isopropal alcohol (not bad for DYE based ink, but slow), but FINALLY found the best.
Here in the US it's sold as Mostenbocker's Lift Off Silicone Latex Caulk Remover. It's water based AND biodegradable! I have a "Gelled Formula" I got at Home Depot (a large US Chain). liftoffinc.com.
THIS STUFF ROCKS! At least on Canon's. I have a clogged Epson, when I get time I'll test it, and with luck, report back.
I managed to get almost all the ink out of a very dried out head (disassembled) using various things and a syringe, followed by canned air. But the Cyan and the Pigment black had clogged jets that you could SEE were clogged. (Hold to the sun and peer in the holes.) Nothing helped. Finally tried Lift Off. 2 minutes later the heads were almost totally fixed. Soaking ten mins more got the rest. AND IT'S WATER SOLUBLE, NO NASTY CHEMICALS & FUMES YOU NEED A MASK FOR! I gently used a toothpick to help loosen it. Clean as a whistle! And FAST. Put on, wait 5 mins, clean off. Amazing. Hope this helps someone!

Have the same B200 error.No one has mentioned the lighting up of the ink cartridges which means that it is functional.The only time that the ink cartridge chariot lights up and seems to be moving normally and ready to print is when I open the cover before turning it on.Then the chariot moves around until it reaches the almost to the total left position,and then theik ink cartridged light up on my Pixma MP560.It reads cover opened.But as soon as I close the cover the ink chariot moves to the right and the lighed ink cartridges go off and the B200 error appears.Then nothing works.I am not sure which one of your suggestions would work best.

After 3 days of trying just about everything, from pushing buttons to cleaning the heads, thanks to ??? this is what finaly worked for me.

"On the last try, I had the cover open, turned the printer off, then turned it on again like how everyone said it should, and while it was still processing to open, before "cover is open" appears, I closed it down and there it was back to normal."

I tried solution #4. Turned off printer, opened it up. I had to move the ink cartidges to the middle by hand. Then I turned it back on and closed it. And it worked...at least for now.

THIS WORKED FOR ME!!
1. Turn OFF Power
2. Open the print head bay (as though you were about to change inks)
3. Turn ON power
4. Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left and let it go past half way
5. Before print carriage reaches left hand side (but after going halfway across) shut the cover.
6. Leave the Printer turned on
7. Good to go.

Good to go, indeed. This fixed my problem. Worth noting though, during one of my attempts I found that two of the ink cartridges were empty but the printer hadn't reported it, and the maintenance dialog said they were full too.

They're worth the watching, those canons.

I solved this error, by switching on the printer while open and then closing it while the printer head is still moving. After this I switched the printer off and then I switched it on normally and it didn't work. So then I switched the printer on like I explained above. Then I went to Maintenance section and did these maintenances:
(I recommend these are done in this order (Search for the manuals on the internet))
1) Cleaning
2) Roller Cleaning
3) Bottom Plate cleaning
4) Auto head alignment
5) Print nozzle check pattern

Then I switched the printer off, and then I switch in on normally (not like I did before). The printer switches on normally :) Problem solved... hope I helped... please reply and comment if this works or not for you.

(My printer is MG5150, this doesn't mean it can't work on other printers)

YES, what others are saying is true. It worked for me & my CANON E510 ~!! Error code was B200 & on LED display it was P-1-0
I did move the carrier almost to left end & close the cover & then clean the print head contacts on both ends & on cartridges. So the error is gone & its working fine again. This was a life saver guide page & I love U all so much & may god bless U all~!! JAYSON. COLOMBO, SRI LANKA

I have a Canon Pixma iP3600. I've tried a few of the above solutions, but so far no luck. I've removed the ink cartridges and cleaned, but I don't know how to remove the printhead. I lifted the gray bar that goes around in front of the cartridges, and tried to lift out the cartridge holder (printhead?) but the edge opposite me hits the printer and so I can't get it out. I don't want to mess up the ribbons. Does anyone know how to remove the ink cartridge holder on a Pixma iP3600? I really like this printer and would like to be able to get it working without major expense.

Was about to take a bat to my MP620B printer. This worked:

Removed & cleaned printer head manually with tissue & a tiny bit of alcohol.

Re-installed (complete with off-brand ink).

Didn't work first time - error code B200.

Did the trick:

Turn off.
Open lid.
Turn on.
Wait til ink tray is halfway, close lid.

That worked. Printed fine. But when I went to do the next job, error code again. I had to do the trick again, printed fine.

Oh, and the whole time, hold that scene from 'Office Space' in your head where the guys take a printer out into a field and go all gangster on it until there isn't a piece left larger than your hand. That may have been what did the trick...

MG5220 here.
Turning off the printer and letting it sit for a while didn't work so I was about to jump into pulling out the print head when I cleared my b200 error very easily.
After plugging the printer back in and having the error persist, I opened the cover and of course, the print head did not go to center. I then nudge the print head to the right and VOILA, it came to life!

Also. My error happened immediately after refilling the tanks, then deep cleaning, then preforming a roller cleaning.

Today I saw that &%&$^#@%!! errorcode. Tried everything. Smashed in frustration the printer on all sides. Then... the erorcode was gone!! It looks like it was printing. It was not. Only empty pages. And tadaaa! The error code is back. Stupid printer. Never again a Canon!

Those who are slamming Canon, please think again, I have had an MX860 for 8 years and this is the first time I have had any kind of problem with it. At the end of the day it's an electronic device, people have problems with £40,000 cars so what's wrong with having a problem with a £200 printer, really can't believe some people. I've still have the problem with the b200 error but if I can't remedy it I shall buy another printhead, no problem, no worries. Canon by far make the best ink jet printers, forget the rest!

Did the trick of turning it off while cover open then on again while cover was still open. Left it open until it went side to side a couple of times then closed the cover before open cover error came up. It continued going for about a minute then whamo. started printing on the MX726.

Can't seem to slide the print head when the unit is off (MP560) Tying a hard reset now by turning off, unplugging and pressing the on/off switch 6 times to fully discharge the capacitor. Will connect again in an hour or so.

I did some combination of all of the suggestions above and my printer did start working after a while.

BUT... later on, it failed again with the B200. I think it's just temperamental and eventually it just thinks the print head is bad again.

Wondering if I should get a new print head or just get a newer printer like the MX922.

I've tried everything here - iX6550, 3 years old - so with great reluctance bought NEW print head at cost of £70 but STILL get 5 orange flashes. I have MP560 printer. Tried #3 and the printer/print head made a clunking sound when it moved. Now, when I turn it on I dont even get the error message - I just get the little orange flashing light and the printer turns itself off! Tried cleaning the print heads and some other options but the print heads now dont even move...

This happen to anyone else? I called Canon - of course they said I should get a new printer as they no longer make the parts. Ugh! They said its a hardware issue and the printer likely overheated, even though I hardly use the thing!

I have the same problem on TWO Canon printer an MSg5320 and an i9900. Canon tech support was of no help and they claim that there is not even a repair service in the Phoenix area where 7million people live. As many of the other comments I will NEVER EVER buy a Canon printer again. Besides these devices are slow and extremely noisy.

Thanks to everyone for this helpful information. My lightly used MX860 threw a B200 code that nothing seemed to cure. I replaced two low ink cartridges and fiddled with open cover and power-off sequences to no avail. I cleaned the print head twice using water and alcohol with no luck. I finally disassembled the head to get access to the rubber gasket and washed it. That must have done the trick as I just printed a printer test page. Perseverance and a lot of helpful tips were the key to getting my clunker of a Canon running again.

B200 on MP560. Dust Off will Help. Use it until the can is cold.
Then I retried "close the lid while the ink is moving".
That worked. One time for one guy. Be careful ! I had to open a window. It's 114 here.

If none of the cleaning options detailed above work then there are three possible other causes for this error.

1. Electronic circuitry - you will need to buy a new printed circuit board or a new printer. Recommend the latter. You can check this by getting the unit into its ready state by the method stated above and trying to scan. If scan works, the problem is one of the following.

2. Mechanical - possibly an obstacle such as a small piece of paper remaining from a paper jam is preventing the printer head from moving correctly. Some people have also found paper clips and the remains of packaging tape causing this. Thoroughly inspect inside and out using a torch for such obstacles.

3. Software - Most likely caused by overheating, (my case). I cleared it by using the "Start Button" method detailed above.

Hope this helps - Canon were of no use, what a surprise!!

I got a B200 error on my PRO 9000. Ive never had it before so I followed one of the suggestions above and it worked.

I unplugged and let it rest for over an hour. Opened the lid and pulled on the ribbon to bring the printer head and inks to the center. Took out the inks and the head. Wiped off the excess ink on the head with a tissue without touching the actual head. Replaced any inks that were very low. )I have to mention that hadnt used the printer for over a month, its possible the inks may have dried up, but not sure). Power on, did a test print and then a regular print. No error code or flashing lights.

If this didnt work, I would have ordered a new head from canon which I have done before when the streaking gets really bad.

Thanks you very much for all the helpful suggestions, thought I was going to have to bin my Canon, but combination of the various approaches described above got it working and I could print out my daughters party invitations!

I think the main thing that worked was having the cover open and closing it whilst the print head was moving. Then managed to get into the menus, ran a deep clean and now it's working perfectly again.

I love the internet when you find solutions to things like this. Another lump of plastic I won't have to throw away!

A warning!! I went to what appeared to be a Canon help page and called the number only to be redirected to another number where I was put to a very hard sell. After 30 minutes of trying to get a solution to the problem the charming but persistent young man tried to pint out how vulnerable my system was and offered to sell me a protection package for $299.99 for 2 years. Nothing to do with my printer problem. I refused. Beware of young men offering solutions to problems that don't exist.

CANON MX870

After spending 2 days here's what I learned AND FIXED IT!

To HARD RESET THIS- unplug for about 10 seconds, press the STOP key and hold it and then power key and hold it. While holding both keys, release the STOP key 4 times, in other words so that the green light switches with the yellow 4 times and stays green, THEN RELEASE BOTH KEYS. wait about a minute or so while the printer does it's thing.

WHEN YOU CAN'T GET IT TO TURN BACK ON- it's because the b200 code is set and you are locked out, so repeat the above steps to get it back on again.

IN ORDER TO PURGE THE VB200 CODE- I had to download "SERVICE TOOL V3400". I had to search all around for this as canon makes sure you can't get it and buy a new printer! WELL SCREW THAT!! After finding one that kept hanging, I found a good link that works with windows 10. With that tool, I was able to reset the counter at the bottom of the page to "0".

Now my b200 code is gone and the printer powers up and down each time as it did when new. And my print heads are squeeky clean (that solution obviously didn't work).

I would post the link I used but don't want canon to shut it down just to sell more printers. You always have the option of doing the unplug/reset option in order to print without needing the v3400 tool. :-)

MAJ 25/08/17 The Service Tool V3400 allow to reset the counter of some Canon printers. For the error code 006 , try this : Solution 1: Check your cartridges: an empty cartridge can lead to error 006 Solution 2 : After you avec clicked on "Main", wait a few minutes.  If the error still here, restarts the Service Tool Solution 3 : Close the service tool Disconnect the USB cable from the printer After 10 seconds, plug back the cable to the printer On Windows, click next when appears "New device" Open the service tool

How to solve error B204 on Canon Maxify printers

The error B204 could happen after a cartridge replacement. First of all, when installing, remove the cartridges from the plastic package, but do not drill any plastic membranes, as this will cause this error when placing the cartridge. The error may also appear if you change a completely empty cartridge: when installing a full cartridge, the printer enters a cleaning cycle, but the printhead has not yet received ink from the newly inserted cartridge.
