How to solve message "scanner unit is open" or "close the scanner unit" on Epson printers




Solution 1:
  • Power off the printer
  • Unplug the power cord and wait 5 minutes
  • Plug back et power on

 Solution 2: When you close the scanner assembly it pushes a small lever that say the scanner is closed. But sometimes, this lever is not pushed far enough, or is defective. Try this:
  • Close the scanner unit and slammed it slightly.
  • If it does not work, try to push the lever with a pencil

I have an Epson WF-7610 that kept prompting this error message
whenever it requires ink cartridges to be changed. It says:
“Scanner unit is not closed”

Can someone please post a photo of where the lever is???

I found it. You need to open it up like you are going to change the ink cartridges. this means you need to lift both top levels. Then you will see the lever on the base portion (bottom part) of the device. If you press down the lever, it will start to print and you will see the ink cartridges go back and forth. Keep your fingers clear. :)

After hours of Googling and trying :

On an Epson WF-7620, open the printer lid as if you were to replace ink. The system will say 'Close the scanner unit'.

With a toothpick, push down the little lever located in a small slot on the inside rim of the unit, close to the power button.

Using the touch screen panel, follow the normal procedure to change the cartridges, while keeping the lever down for the first bit.

Jonas -- Yes this is the solution! I needed to use a bright flashlight to see exactly where the thin lever is and position the toothpick horizontally in the slot, keeping my hand out of the way of the mad back and forth passes of the print head.

My question now is, during printhead align I see there are 5 pattern choices (1-7) to select in order to choose the best solid looking square in each pattern, shown in the printhead test printout. Problem is, my 840 workforce only printed out three patterns of black/gray squares represented by Xs below. Don't know how to evaluate this.???

Update: I bypassed the above problem by using the Epson web site instead of the printer control panel. The subsequent printout makes sense and is more thorough. Another Epson SNAFU wasting everyone's time!!!

Finding and depressing the hidden lever seems to have worked for me. Sloppy engineering by Epson.

This is the printer that they sent me for free when the previous Epson displayed a fatal warning code. They said, "Oh, that bad. We send new printer. So sorry."

It started again. This time I took a Q-tip saturated with rubbing alcohol. Worked the "lever" up and down with the Q-tip hoping to get enough alcohol onto the switch to clean it. This seems to have worked. Two weeks without a close the cove beeping alert.

I opened the printer as if i was going to replace ink. Placed 3 layers of electrical tape 1/4" long and placed that tape on the nub (by the serial #) and no more random annoying beeps asking to close the scanner unit.

I was accustomed to HP and other brands where opening the service lid automatically enters the "replace cartridge" mode. I opened the service lid and couldn't get around the "close the scanner unit" message. I guess on an Epson you have to use the menu to enter ink replacement mode BEFORE opening the service lid. If anyone else is stuck like I was, the process works normally as long as you enter the ink replacement mode in the printer's interface BEFORE opening the service lid.

Yes! On the printer control little window go to settings and maintenance > replace ink> The printer says "Open the unit", so you open the complete unit where you can see the ink cartridges, the printer starts to check the ink cartridges all (wait a couple of minutes) and then a message saying "all your ink cartridges are installed correctly, you can now close the unit",so you close the unit, wait another couple of minutes and the printer says, "Everything is OK" then you hit the OK image, that's it, it work like a Swiss clock!!

*** This is for the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4830 ***

When you open the scanner area as if to replace the ink, there is a small open square on the left hand side toward the front of the machine near the power button. You can barely see a small black lever inside that square. Use a pen / toothpick / etc to gently push that lever down (not "out" but down toward the floor) and make sure you are pressing down long enough for the display screen to reset itself. From there, the error should clear and if you go into the menu for ink replacement *** while still holding the lever down *** it should reset itself. Hope this helps someone save themselves a ton of frustration and wasted time!

WF-7620. I found the solution. I will register it as a pending patent. When you open the scanner area as if to replace the ink, there is a small open rectangle on the left hand side toward the front of the machine near the power button. You can barely see a small black lever inside, then look over(on the scanner top section) down the Epson logo there is a small tab, just place some masking tape to increase the size of that tab, as soon as you close the upper tray the notification will disappear

For Artisan 835, look under the cover there is a small magnet -this is to indicate the printer that the cover is close. Make sure is aligned - test with another magnet positioned in different places.

Most of the time if there is any problem with the scanner then the system would show you an error message. With that, one would know the issue. Sometimes changing the scanner cable would do the work and if that doesn't work then better to change the entire scanner bed through printer service center.
