This is all a scam by canon to get you to buy more of THEIR ink cartridges. If they, or one is empty you replace them your printer will work. If you use only black (with color turned off)and fill your own black as I do follow this:

1.) Turn your printer off
2.) Hold down the reset button while pressing the on button.
3.) while still holding down the on button release the reset button then press the reset button twice.
4.) release the on button it will flash and 0 will appear in the window. then press the reset button 4 times and the on button twice.Wait and the printer will turn off.
5.) turn printer back on let it go thru it's stuff. You can now print.

Realist and patsmart. It didn't work for me. I my color cartridge is empty and I don't have color turned off. Could this be the problem. How do I turn off the color. Also I don't refill my cartridges. How do I do this?

Thank you @patsmart this is the only solution that has worked. It works for a while, then I get the error code again and follow your directions again and it works for a while, again. Rinse and repeat. At least my printer will still work for me. TY
