I didn't understand method 2, step 5 "Press 278 and 3". Does the and imply to press the 8 and 3 together, or is the instruction supposed to mean "Press 2783 in sequence"?
I don't have the problem yet, but I have been using the MFC-J480DW for five years with refillable cartridges and never allowing firmware updates (still operating on 2016 firmware). Love this printer... paper handling is the best I have ever had... no paper jams, ever, and the printout is as good today as the day I bought it. It cost me $68.00 when I bought it and $22.00 for refillable cartridges that have never caused any problem.

Yup, same problem here. Solution #2 directions don't make sense. Once you hit the settings button, entering the 5 keys doesn't work. No purge directions come up. Oh well. Using knockoff ink isn't an option. These companies really like to stick it to the consumers. (Sigh)
