How to solve error code 0XC18A0406 on HP printers

The error code 0XC18A0406 could appears ont these HP printers: Photosmart 3210, C5180, C7280...


Try this:
  • Press the On button to turn the printer off.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Remove all the ink cartridges.
  • Wait two minutes.
  • Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
  • Press the On button to turn the printer on.
  • Install the ink cartridges when prompted.
  • If the error code does not display, the issue is resolved.
  • If the 0xc18xxxxx or 0xc19xxxxx ink system error code displays on the front panel, service the printer.

I just went through HP's on line chat fix for this problem and it worked. Following is their procedure:
A. - Press and hold the “*” key.
B. - Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.

Display should say “Support” and display the FW rev (something like R0631R)
(Mine said R6025M)

Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.

Press and release the “OK” button.

Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,

Press and release the “OK” button.

Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.

Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.

Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.

Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.

Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer

Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK.

If the printer has already initialized, then go to the next step. If not, the printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALI-ZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

To verify printer functionality print a SELF TEST PAGE.

Where do I find the * key on my c8180? I don't have a number pad?

Yep! This does work! But what surprises me the most is somebody from HP would actually provide this information to a consumer. Information like this is generally a "guarded secret" meant only for HP Certified Technicians. Earle it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, "Thank you so very much for sharing this with the public at large as you have saved me and anyone reading your post a whole lot of their hard earned cash!"

omg! Thank you sooo much! I saw someone else's post that said to do the same steps with code and all and I tried and it did not work. The only difference was the step to unplug cord from both ends and plug back in specifically. Which I did following your instructions and it worked! You are the best. thx so much!

Followed your instructions to the T my temperamental printer however refuses to comply instead spitting out 0xc18a0106 vs initial 0xc18a0406 and I thought I was confused enough before he-he

Press OK+Cancel+Black copy+Color copy - unplug power cable/ wait 1 miute - unpress buttons, plug Power cable. Wait for printer power off/ Then press power on button/ Make twice or triple/ Used on HP Photosmart C7283 on 0xc18a0406 and 0xc18a0506 error
